1s Trimester Reflection

I have learned a lot in Mandarin since the start of this Trimester, and am satisfied with my progress and grades. I have made considerable effort especially in the area of homework. I have also improved in participation. I feel that I have improved a lot in listening and speaking; I now recognize and am able to understand more of what is being said in Mandarin, such as when my Chinese friends talk and what is being said at market places and restaurants. However, I still struggle with reading and character writing because I find it hard to memorize the characters and how to write them. I also have a problem with remembering characters long-term. In the next Trimester I plan to improve in reading and writing, by reading more and reviewing more so that the characters will go into my long-term memory.

Mandarin Class Goal Setting 1st Trimester

Name: Tong B. Level: Mandarin Intermediate Grade: 8

What is your difficulty in learning Mandarin?

My difficulty is trying to remember how to write all the different characters.

Please list your goals in different areas:

Listening: Be able to catch more words spoken at a faster pace.

Oral: Be able to use Mandarin in a wider range of situations, and improve my range of vocabulary.

Reading: Be able to recognize more chinese characters, and also read more Mandarin books.

Character Writing: Be able to write more characters, improve grammar.

Classroom participation: Participate more in classroom discussions, and ask more questions.

To achieve my goal, I would like to:

Listening: Try to listen more attentively in conversations and ask questions if I don't understand something.

Oral: Listen carefully when mandarin is being spoken in any situations, and just try to follow along.

Reading: Try reading some basic mandarin books to start with.

Character Writing: Visit Laoshi's Mandarin Blog more often to learn the new characters.

Classroom participation: Participate more enthusiastically in class, like putting my hands up, and answering any questions.
